CHM2301   Physical Chemistry 1   (10 credits)

Description

This unit provides core thermodynamic and kinetic principles that underpin much of chemistry. The first and second laws of thermodynamics are revised and then combined leading to a treatment of phase equilibria, mixtures and solutions. Rates of chain-reactions are explored, and the steady-state approximation used to identify reaction mechanisms. The basic principles of catalysis and reaction dynamics are introduced.
